Guitar Man

Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003

I haven't got round to telling you about my great Christmas present that Old Annie got for me. An electric guitar!! Second childhood (or teenage years anyway) happening now.

When I was about 10 my mother went on holiday to Spain and brought me back a Spanish guitar. The neck was too wide for my little hands to reach right across, so although I learnt a few tunes/chords and got quite good at working things out by ear, I never learnt to play properly.

When I was 16-18 I was in a band playing bass but once we went our separate ways to college that was the end of that. The lead guitarist lives in Australia now I think. At college I again was in a band but that never really went anywhere at all. Once I was married with kids I just gave it up completely.

Now my kids are teenagers themselves. My eldest son also has just got a guitar, and my daughter reckons she wants a drum-kit. At this rate we'll be the new Partridge Family! My son is into Nirvana, who I also quite like, which is good for me because my musical tastes tend to be a bit prehistoric. So I've suggested we try a Nirvana song, maybe 'Come as you are' or 'About a girl'. So keep an eye out for the debut album by the Minto Family Minstrels (the name of the band needs a bit of work done it).

Favourite Song of the Moment-The Scientist by Coldplay.
