A winter's tale

Wednesday, Mar. 03, 2004

Old Annie just got one year older. To celebrate/commiserate I took her out to a restaurant that is very near to where I work. I've driven past this place hundreds of times but never been in it before. It specialises in fish dishes, which is Old Annie's favourite kind of food.

When we got there the car park was full, so we parked down the road. It was freezing out, but luckily we didn't have to walk too far. I think our standards have gone up considerably because we weren't that impressed with the place.

Firstly the seating was open plan, rather like a school or work cafeteria. There were no nooks for people to have an intimate meal.

We got a drink while we looked at the menu. Old Annie was spoiled for choice, she couldn't make up her mind. One thing the place didn't lack and that was waiting staff. There were loads of them wandering about. Someone came and asked if we were ready to order, but we sent them away because Old Annie couldn't decide. In the end she ordered a haddock and leek tart to start and Dover sole for main course; I ordered sardines for starters and duck for main- fancy ordering duck in a fish restaurant!

when the starters came Old Annie was shocked-she had a huge portion of tart. My sardines were great-they weren't at all like the tinned version- no tomato sauce. Old Annie said she was already full after eating her tart, which she didn't like very much.

We'd no sooner finished our starters than our plates were whipped away and in a few minutes our main courses came. My duck was really nice too. Old Annie enjoyed her Dover sole. We had finished both courses in less than an hour and we were already being offered dessert.

They certainly liked to keep things moving in that place. We deliberately kept them waiting on the desserts-they weren't going to get rid of us that easily.

The couple next to us were just starting as we were on our desserts. Guess what they had. She had a huge hunk of haddock and leek tart, and he had sardines. Amazing. So we liked the food, except Old Annie won't choose that tart again, but weren't too impressed with 'round 'em up, and move'em out' mentality of the staff.
